Our cocktail this week is a “riff on a riff” of a classic cocktail. We call it Bebbo’s Baby.
It descends from the Bee’s Knees, a classic cocktail from Prohibition days composed of gin, fresh lemon juice, and honey. “Bee’s knees” was flapper slang for awesome. The Bebbo cocktail came onto the scene shortly after, with the addition of orange juice and bitters to the mix. The name is a little weird, but the cocktail itself is fantastic (better than the Bee’s Knees, even).
We took the Bebbo and went one step further, using our Aquavit – Private Reserve in place of gin. We love how the spice notes play with the bright citrus. In fact, we love to how our Aquavit plays in many classic gin cocktails.
The resulting drink is refreshing and savory, citrusy and herbaceous. It’s perfect for a summer day.
1½ oz Aquavit-Private Reserve
¾ oz Fresh Lemon Juice
¾ oz Honey Syrup
¼ oz Fresh Orange Juice
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
Shake all ingredients with ice, strain into chilled coupe glass. Garnish with a cocktail cherry.
* Did someone say “cocktail cherry?” Here’s the recipe for our homemade brandied cherries. Grab some fresh cherries from your farmers market & whip up some! They’re awesome… Or rather, they’re the bee’s knees!
